Call for 'Outside the Box 5.0 2017'

Outside the Box 2016 NYC

Outside the Box 2016 NYC

Shipped across the country in Bankers boxes, the Toronto Design Offsite Festival (TO DO) & WantedDesign (WD) unpack, install, and present a dozen distinct national and international showcases at the Nuvango Gallery in downtown Toronto. Working with local correspondents, each box includes original works from local designers, reflecting the particular resources and makers of each area.

Concrete Cat had the opportunity to display work in the 2016 Toronto Design Offsite Festival's 'Outside the Box' project representing work from Edmonton. It meant more eyes seeing our work in exhibits in both Toronto and New York, and on social media.

This year, Concrete Cat is the official correspondent for the exhibit representing Edmonton's designers. This is where you come in. We're putting out a public call to gather 3-6 works that we think are the best in reflecting our city and its designers. The theme of this years box is "discovery". For us this means consideration of narrative. Objects with hidden meanings or multiple uses, ready to be uncovered or created by the user. We like the thoughtful and bizarre. Creative interpretations on the theme are welcome.

After its successful presentations at Toronto Design Offsite Festival, and at WantedDesign Brooklyn, the fifth edition of ‘Outside the Box’ will be presented during the Toronto Design Offsite Festival, January 16-22, 2017. The exhibit will also travel for presentation at WantedDesign, part of NYCxDESIGN in May 2017. Subject to opportunities and budgets, the exhibit may also travel further afield during that year.

TO DO and WD will cover the costs of shipping 1 box per city to Toronto, New York, and its return to the city of origin; install the exhibition of all boxes in Toronto and New York; and provide signage, information and promote the project.
