Outside the Box 5.0: Edmonton Public Call Application

Deadline: October 4, 2016

Concrete Cat had the opportunity to display work in the 2016 Toronto Design Offsite Festival's 'Outside the Box' project representing work from Edmonton. It meant more eyes seeing our work in exhibits in both Toronto and New York, and on social media.

This year, Concrete Cat is the official correspondent for the exhibit representing Edmonton's designers. This is where you come in. We're putting out a public call to gather 3-6 works that we think are the best in reflecting our city and its designers. The theme of this years box is "discovery". For us, this means consideration of narrative. Objects with hidden meanings or multiple uses, ready to be uncovered or created by the user. We like the thoughtful and bizarre. Creative interpretations on the theme are welcome.

TO Design Offsite (TO DO) in collaboration with WantedDesign (WD) will unpack, install, and present the international showcase at the Nuvango Gallery in downtown Toronto from January 16-22, 2017. Our box will then travel to New York for WantedDesign, as part of NYCxDESIGN from May 20-23, 2017. TO DO and WD will cover the costs of shipping our box to Toronto, New York, and its return. TO DO and WD will also provide signage, information and promotion for the project. We promise that the work selected will be displayed thoughtfully and in it's best light.

Things to keep in mind:

  1. Must respond to the theme of "discovery"
  2. Will fit within 1 standard Bankers box (typical dimensions 15” x 12” x 10”).  Your work will complement 3-6 other projects and share the box, so keep size in mind. Objects can be folded, or assembled on site.
  3. The work is already made. Preference will be given to objects that are salable immediately. The work needs to be in our hands very quickly.
